Hall of the Armenian Prelature,
the presentation of the book
"Exile, Orphans, Melkonian Institute", compiled by His Eminence
Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian. |
The book will be presented by Yeghia Kayayan and following the kinetson ceremony,
Sissi Torossian will be decorated with the decoration of Mesrob Mashdots of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia.

We take this opportunity to congratulate Archbishop Varoujan Hergelian for
his initiative to
undertake this task. The Melkonian Educational Institute is
undoubtedly an extremely
important asset of the Armenian-Cypriot community.
How our next generation of students will
thrive in Armenian educational and cultural environment IF
Agbu's Education Department keeps phasing out gradually its school activities and programs in the Armenian Diaspora. In the next decade, apparently all schools administered or sponsored by AGBU will be closed, because based on their philosophy of to be an Armenian is to feel like an Armenian, it does not matter if you don't speak Armenian. They have an alternative, the Armenian Virtual College, but does it replace the traditional schools? No. Let's use modern technology in the schools and not on the web! Their reasoning for closure of schools is simple and convincing to the general public; the decline in the number of enrollments, which was also their main excuse for the closure of Melkonian Institute.
It has never been financial. In reality it's been always financial. When parents cannot afford the rising cost of tuition fees for their children and AGBU does not commit itself to cover the deficit of the schools, then parents are compelled to educate their children at non-Armenian schools. Same old story, "Not enough students". Past operation and image has changed, they have set new rules to conduct business.
Have we seen any new schools built? None! Our schools are endangered species and soon we will have no teachers who will teach Armenian language, literature and culture. |

Let's face it. Without Melkonian School, we will have
fewer crops of intellectuals and thinkers.
Strengthen the good, not the evil, in the conduct of
members
of the Melkonian family.

Schools are a powerful, if not the only, stimulus for achieving
the historical, cultural and spiritual wholeness of the Armenian nation .
Ribbon cutting of Cultural Centers is not the solution to our failures!
Those who are thrashing this project, should unplug their ears, listen and cooperate.
Never abandon your most fundamental duties!
