The decision to close the school was dictated by few people who, it is speculated, have financial interests in the sale of the school's vast estate in central Nicosia. Currently, a Greek Cypriot school occupies the estate rent-free, while the Armenians of Europe and the Middle East have no alternative as to where to learn their own language and culture while preparing for the prestigious universities in Europe and the world. Sponsors have repeatedly promised full funding for the school for years to come, while the Melkonian Alumni and other Armenian groups are ready to establish a management body for the school that will make sure it succeeds to its full potential. The government of Cyprus has pledged money and unconditional support for Melkonain. Even the leader of the Turkish community in Cyprus has expressed his concerns on how the Armenian community, at large, has allowed the school to be closed.
