Mr. Setrakian still has not found a way to get out of Melkonian impasse.
A Group of dignitaries are proposing AGBU new ideas which will put an end
to 5-year long dispute between AGBU and the Worldwide Melkonian Alumni.

It encourages to take appropriate steps in order to ensure that
secondary education in Armenian will continue to be available.
This is Melkonian Educational Institute as seen from outer space.
We all know that it is located in the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus.
But do we know that nothing can replace its loss?
Unroot it and place it in Yerevan. What do we get? Nothing!
Melkonian is not the same as the remains of Manougian Family.
This is what the world wide Melkonian Alumni is fighting to keep
whereas the NY Central Board of AGBU have issued death warrant.
Isn't it time for these handful men to abandon their seats?

Aglandjia Gymnasium to leave Melkonian after Christmas 2009
According to an article published today, August 25, 2009
by Cyprus Greek newspaper Phileleftheros,
Aglandjia Gymnasium will return to its building in January 2010,
thus leaving the Melkonian Educational Institute buildings vacant.
Let us hope this is a positive thing,
and that MEI will have a better future than just laying there.

The attached E-mail reports the start of Armenian courses at
the Education Centres of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
This initiative has nothing to do with to our Petition.
We ask the Government to mediate and help reopen Melkonian.
That is the only purpose of the Petition submitted to the Government.

Suggestion from the desk of the
Why don't we follow the footsteps of AGBU - California Melkonian Alumni
and organize the traditional main activities on annual basis.
1. The annual BANQUET or DINNER-DANCE
(Usually held in March)
2. The annual PICNIC, held in the summer
(July, August, or September)
There is no other way to keep Melkoniantsis in California together!
13 Minority Schools will close in Turkey including 1 Armenian school in Shishli.

Now the students have to go to local Turkish schools.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias, paid an official visit to Armenia on July 6 and 7, 2009. He had a very interesting interview with AZG daily. We print in Armenian, his reply to a question regarding the future of Melkonian Educational Institute. Once again, we emphasize that although Melkonian was a "gift" to AGBU, but the Will of the benefactors had attached conditions, which were all obliterated. Now, Melkonian has been declared as a National Heritage by the Cyprus Minister of Interior in a Listing Order which defines Melkonian of special architectural/historic/social character and natural beauty. |

Dr.Yervant Zorian launches Armenian Virtual College (AVC), sponsored by AGBU. He is Virage Logic's Vice President and Chief Scientist since 2000. He also served as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories and Chief Technical Advisor to LogicVision. He received an MSc degree from the University of Southern California, and a Ph.D. from McGill University. He was elected to the AGBU Central Board of Directors in 2008. He is also a trustee of the American University of Armenia. |
